In the summer of 2014, mILp responded to the accessible transportation crisis by reaching outside the box with our Accessible Ride Demonstration Voucher Project. This involved a collaboration with the City of Helena, Capital Taxi (a privately owned local taxi company) and mILp. This 90-day demonstration project proved successful by providing a total of 444 rides for seniors and people with disabilities, 60% of which were rides outside Capital Transit’s normal operating hours. The Voucher Demonstration Project provided meaningful and crucial information to mILp and the community regarding the need for accessible and affordable transportation in the Helena community. Because of this, mILp partnered with Capitol Taxi in September 2016 to launch an evening and weekend accessible taxi service for those in the Helena area who have a paratransit card, A.I.R. – Accessible, Integrated, Rides. Riders pay $1 each way within the taxi service area while A.I.R. supporters and donors cover the remaining cost.
