Within the City of Helena, Montana, evening and weekend accessible, subsidized, integrated, and affordable public transportation is non existent. Capital Transit’s, curb-to-curb hours of operation are 6:30am- 5:30pm Monday-Friday with no evening and weekend rides. Transportation-dependent seniors and people with disabilities are forced to schedule their lives within a sixty hour window. The remaining 108 hours are just not an option for public transportation. A lack of affordable and accessible transportation options may cause seniors and people living with disabilities to become geographically isolated and socially excluded. This affects not only individuals but also entire communities. It is just simply not enough to offer opportunities within our community if there are prohibitive conditions, such as a lack of available, accessible, integrated, and affordable transportation, which prevents them from accessing their community.
